Eid-ul-Adha 2012: Sheigh's Address

- 26 October 2012

In the name of Allah (SWT) who without a shadow of doubt is who we submit to in our entirety. It is to Allah (SWT) that we express our sincere thanks for the gift that is Islam. For it is Allah (SWT) that has bestowed upon us the mercy of Islam; and the guidance according to the practical example of the Nabi Mohammad (SAW), and the sacred text of the Holy Quran. Incontrovertible then is our bearing witness to the Oneness of Allah (SWT) who is Allahu Akbar

Al-Azhar Madrassah Article

- 24 October 2012

The Al Azhar vision is to establish a leading, progressive Islamic institution that fosters holistic growth in society. In this vain, we aim to serve the community by promoting the masjied as a centre of ibadah encompassing learning/education and social development. This includes our madrassah program that successfully held its first class in April 2012. We currently employ 3 teachers that cater for learners from ages 6 to 16 years.

We aim to develop and raise the awareness and consciousness of our students, to place their trust in Allah. Our teachers attempt to present learning as a natural way of the siraatal mustaqeem by promoting education as a lifelong policy according to Quran and Sunnah. To achieve these goals we offer interactive instruction of which the structure and dynamics are:

  • Insightful courses that appeal to the analytical and constructively critical intellectual questioning of material and not mere imitating of dogma and opinion
  • Establish awareness that as everything changes over time, the application of the laws of deen are to be seen as continuously evolving so as to accommodate the changing structure and dynamics of human society
  • The encouragement of debate and discussion on the absolute relevance and necessity of Islam society today

We place our trust in Allah and our humble appeal is that we may, with the mercy of Allah, achieve the aforementioned goals through perseverance and truth for all generous to come, insha-allah ameen.

Recent Madrassah Activities:

On the 15 September 2012, the Al Azhar madrassah, in conjunction with Islamic Life Madrassah based in Kensington, embarked on an educational excursion. Our first stop was the Simonstown masjied where we met one of the original Muslim inhabitants of the area. Learners and their parents/guardians had the opportunity to hear about the challenges of the muslim community during the pre and post apartheid era. After a brief break walking around Simonstown, we set off for Boulders beach where we watched penguins waddling in their natural habitat. The boardwalk is nestled between protected foliage with the penguins safely enclosed in their breeding chambers. After a light lunch, we drove to Noordhoek Lighthouse where the breathtaking view of our coastline kept learners captivated until we reached our destination. Learners got a short overview of its history. We stopped over at OceanView Masjied for midday prayers before moving on to the Constantia Masjied and Kabrstaan. After a lecture, we drove home.

The madrassah is planning its next excursion, a nature walk in the Silvermine conservation area, during November 2012 Inshallah.
